Hello and welcome to my blog! On this page I will be documenting my experience, as well as interesting things I learn while out shadowing. This blog will be a personal insight into my mind and how I perceive these new experiences. I hope you enjoy it!

I began shadowing at the Nationwide Children’s Livingston Surgery Center the week of Sept 14th 2025. My main mentor is the nurse director Amy White, but each week I am assigned to follow a new person and learn about what they do. At first I was very intimidated and quite nervous to enter the hospital setting, as I didn’t know what exactly to expect. However, I ended up greatly enjoying my time getting to know all of the staff members and learning about the procedures they go through. The first nurse I shadowed was named Luda and she was very sweet. She was a nurse that took care of patients both pre and post-op and I sat with her as she explained the process of charting patient’s info, taking vitals, and obtaining the necessary forms in order to go through with the surgery. I spent about 6 days observing Luda as well as other nurses in her nursing pod.

After learning more about the charting process, I was able to identify which surgery each patient was going through. After my first two weeks of shadowing, my mentor Amy allowed me to enter the operating rooms and observe there. I learned that some of the most common procedures performed were dental procedures, tonsillectomies (removal of one or both of the tonsils), and eye muscle surgeries. Some of the most common eye muscle surgeries were both lateral and medial rectus recessions and resections. By the end of my first few weeks of shadowing, I became very interested in the eyes and I made the decision to primarily focus on observing eye procedures!
