Annual Exam at An OBGYN Office
An “annual” appointment at Northwest OBGYN is very similar to a “well visit” one may make with their primary care provider. At this appointment, the examinations/conversations that take place rely on one big factor: the age range the patient falls in. Of course this is completely independent of any personal concerns the patient may have, but if a person comes in with no other inquiries, the services provided are based on age. The main criteria for an annual exam falls into 5

Birth Control Pills: What Roles Do Estrogen and Progestin Play Within Them?
During my time shadowing CNP Kelli Miller at Northwest OBGYN, I have learned a lot about the female body and ways that medicine can help manage reproductive health. One major topic that is often brought up by patients during appointments is birth control and the various options available. Each and every person reacts differently to all forms of birth control, so what works for some may not work for others! Birth control comes in many forms, but today I will be talking about

Will There Be A Shift? My Industry Today vs Tomorrow
After all the time spent at Northwest OBGYN, one of the only “pain points” I have noticed at my mentor site is an increase in patient load when one of the doctors goes on leave/vacation. Due to it being a smaller private practice, there are limited options for re-allocating the doctors' patients for care. There is little to no AI use at my mentor site, therefore I feel that the “human” element of the job will remain incredibly relevant. Not only that, but interpersonal connec

Update On My "One Word" and Following Up On My Mentoring Experience
At the beginning of the year, I was assigned with the task of choosing one word to guide me through 2026. The word I chose was fulfillment, “the satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one's abilities or character,”. I chose this word because I felt that I was falling short of my own expectations and responsibilities, which led to a great deal of frustration and disappointment. I realized that I needed more than just the idea of a good grade or verbal valida

New Mentor Site: Northwest OBGYN
At the beginning of this semester I began shadowing Kelli Miller, Certified Nurse Practitioner, at Northwest OBGYN. After spending over 50 hours in a hospital setting shadowing both nurses and surgeons, I decided to change things up and broaden my experience by shadowing at a smaller private practice focused solely on women’s health. Women's health had piqued my interest as I have an aunt that is an OBGYN, and I figured I could use what I learn from this opportunity to help

My One Word For 2026
Now that the New Year has rolled around and the start of my final semester of high school has arrived, it has become my top priority to finish strong. The idea of Jon Gordon’s “One Word” movement was brought upon me and my peers in my career mentorship class . This movement is about choosing 1 word to drive one towards personal development all throughout the year. The 3-step process that goes towards choosing the word is fairly simple, however I found it a bit difficult to c

A Fascinating Surgery
There is one singular procedure I observed that stuck out to me more than the rest. I was able to sit in o n an Artisan eye lens readjustment. This lens is one of many implantable intraocular lenses (IOL)’s, and is specifically clipped onto the iris to correct vision problems. Image of the Artisan Eye Lens When watching this procedure, the size of the tools used and the precision that the surgeon was required to have surprised me greatly. The surgeon used Artiflex/Artisan

PACU Blog
Image of a post anesthesia care unit (PACU) During the second week of my shadowing, I was assigned to observe in the post anesthesia care unit (PACU). In this unit, specialized registered nurses care for patients after they have gone through surgery. The nurses monitor the consciousness of the patient, their vitals , and any potential post-operation complications. During my time spent in the PACU, I noticed that it was a much calmer environment then out on the main floor. De

My Most Commonly Watched Surgery
Diagram of the different eye muscles One of my major learning goals was to identify and explain some of the most common surgeries performed at my mentoring site. I have since identified eye muscle surgeries as one of them, and I have become fascinated with them over time. The very first procedure I watched in the operating room was a lateral rectus recession, and I will never forget how amazing it was to witness firsthand! There are two main types of eye muscle surgeries per

Welcome!
Hello and welcome to my blog! On this page I will be documenting my experience, as well as interesting things I learn while out shadowing. This blog will be a personal insight into my mind and how I perceive these new experiences. I hope you enjoy it! I began shadowing at the Nationwide Children’s Livingston Surgery Center the week of Sept 14th 2025. My main mentor is the nurse director Amy White, but each week I am assigned to follow a new person and learn about wh
